PUBLIC HEALTH FUNDAMENTALS: CONCEPTS, THEORIES AND FRAMEWORKS

This booklet is designed to provide an overview of the module. As such, it complements, and should be used in conjunction with the programme handbook, and the University Assessment Regulations(ARNA) and the Student Regulations Handbook. SYNOPSIS OF MODULE
This module offers you an opportunity to critically analyse a broad range of public health theories, concepts and frameworks for public health practice. Through the development of an individual learning contract, you will tailor the focus of your learning towards meeting your own needs in relation to public health practice. In aIDition, you will engage with public health issues of interest to you, through your independent and directed learning.

You will consider modes of engaging with public health knowledge through the development of critical information literacy and academic writing skills. Formative assessment and opportunities for feedback will be provided through seminar activities, including enquiry based learning presentations, discussions and contract development. This feedback will inform the summative assessment to ensure opportunities for assessment for learning are maximised. The summative assessment will consist of a portfolio containing evidence of formative learning and assessment, a 2000 word written critical analysis of an issue relevant to public health theory and practice and a learning contract.

AIMS OF MODULE
This module aims to give you an opportunity to critically engage with key theories, concepts and frameworks underpinning public health practice in a range of contexts. It also aims to develop your understanding of the social dimensions of public health. In aIDition, the module aims to develop your ability to engage with public health knowledge through the development of critical information literacy and academic writing skills, based on assessment of your learning needs.

ASSESSMENT BRIEF
a) Formative assessment: detail of process and rationale

Formative tasks are intended to help your developmental learning needs and will vary. Examples include:
• A diagnostic essay on a public health issue to be completed by you and submitted for feedback to assess your academic writing development needs. With further development this can inform the summative written assessment component of the portfolio
• A self assessment checklist of learning needs
• A plagiarism exercise using Turnitin
• A reflective piece on a presentation on a public health issue
• A piece of work produced for one of the seminarsh
