The end of the Civil War and the ratification of the 13th Amendment meant freedom for millions of enslaved people. But, as Foner states, “did freedom mean simply the absence of slavery, or did it imply other rights for the former slaves…?” Chapter 15 examines several different meanings of freedom that emerged in the Reconstruction Era. After reading the chapter and the primary sources, explain in your own words at least 2 of these different ‘freedoms’ that became crucial for African Americans and how that impacted Reconstruction policies. Next, describe 2 reasons why Reconstruction failed to manifest many of those freedoms and the lasting impact of that failure on our U.S. History even today.
