1 Draft IRP

Summary:

In the Independent Research Project (IRP), students conduct an analysis project using SAS primarily and Excel as needed to analyze real-world data.

• In the first assignment (IRP Research Question and Data Set), you identified the data set you wanted to use, developed a research question, and identified a statistical question that could be answered analytically.
• In this assignment, you will create and submit a business memo (template attached) that clearly communicates your analysis of the data set you identified in the previous assignment. When you submit this draft of your IRP, you will get feedback from your classmates and your instructor. You should use this feedback to improve your IRP.
• In later assignments (IRP Memorandum, IRP Presentation, Presentation Questions Reply), you will submit the final version of your IRP, create and submit a PowerPoint presentation that summarizes your IRP, present your analysis via a recorded video presentation, and answer questions about your presentation.

2 IRP Presentation

You only have four minutes, so be concise and careful with your language.

Use the PowerPoint Narration tool for your slides, even if you present face to face, it is good practice.

Information on slides reflects understanding and effective summarization. Information has not simply been copied and pasted from another IRP memo. Information is presented in logical sequence/structure.

3 IRP Memorandum

In this Independent Research Project (IRP), students provide a business decision recommendation using SAS primarily and Excel as needed to obtain real world data. The student will create and submit a business report that clearly communicates a recommendation based on their analysis of the data set that includes an analysis of different courses of action using weighted factors. The students will also create a Power Point presentation that summarizes their IRP and present their analysis live, via video-teleconference or as a recorded video presentation. The student will also answer questions about their presentation.

Summary of the whole IRP. You may not be able to write this portion until you have finished the rest of the paper.

26.0 pts Good Paragraph 1: Summary of IRP. Paragraph 2: Discussion of tools and data. Paragraph 3: Summary of findings, analysis conclusion, and recommendation. 16.0 pts Fair Missing one of the introduction paragraphs, or not well written. 5.0 pts Inadequate Missing two or more of the relevant parts of the introduction, or not written well.

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeIssue Identification

Requires critical thinking and creative thinking.

12.0 pts Good Clearly discussed the problem that the analysis is investigating. Clearly identified a primary issue. 10.0 pts Fair Discussed the primary issue that is being investigated somewhat, but not clearly identify the problem. 5.0 pts Inadequate Discussed a symptom of the problem only.

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeIssue Analysis

How are you going to investigate your problem with this data?

12.0 pts Good Clearly discussed analysis plan (specifically mentions ANOVA, Linear Regression, or other analysis method). Clearly states research question in plain language. Correctly states statistical question that matches research question (null and alternative hypotheses). 7.0 pts Fair Missing one of the elements of this section. 3.0 pts Inadequate Missing two or more of the elements of this section.

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeData

Where did the data come from? What did you do to prepare it for analysis?

9.0 pts Good Clearly discussed data: 1) Source 2) Any data cleansing required (treatment of outliers?) 3) Appropriate descriptive statistics table included. 6.0 pts Fair Missing one of the required elements of this section. 3.0 pts Inadequate Missing two or more elements of this section.

9.0 pts

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeAnalysis

9.0 pts Full Marks Clear discussion of analysis: 1) Identify variables (independent, dependent, type) 2) Relevant charts and tables 3) Discussion references any charts, tables, values (pvalue, etc.) needed to reach conclusion. 6.0 pts Fair Missing one of the elements of this section. 3.0 pts Inadequate Missing two or more elements of this section.

Course of Action Development

8.0 pts Full Marks Student developed three or more courses of action (COA’s) to the problem based on a better understanding of the problem obtained by their analysis. COA could optimize ROI, optimize time, optimize, optimize impact on people, “status quo”, etc. 6.0 pts Fair Student developed two or more possible solutions. 2.0 pts Inadequate Student did not develop any possible solutions to the problem, or it was not clear that they understood how to think critically about solutions to the problem.
