When plant stomata open to intake CO2, they also release water in a process called transpiration. We ask how increased CO2 levels affect plant growth and transpiration. Plants want to keep their stomata as closed as possible to minimize water loss, and elevated atmospheric CO2 levels allow plants to keep their stomata less open while uptaking the same amount of carbon as their ambient CO2 counterparts, who must open their stomata more. More atmospheric CO2 allows for more efficient growth via carbon assimilation, as well. Therefore, we hypothesize that elevated CO2 levels will decrease transpiration and increase growth rate.
