In this week’s discussion I was able to learn about the importance of relating statistical information to document and improve health outcomes.

1. In this week’s discussion I was able to learn about the importance of relating statistical information to document and improve health outcomes.

Statistics relates to collecting information, analyzing the obtained data to establish numerical conclusions (interpreting) and transfer numerical data (Zach, 2022). Researchers have found that many nurses do not involve in reading, studying and analyzing research, as they find them complex, time consuming and also because the research have data meanings that some professionals are not able to fully understand (Aggarwal, 2018). However, the reality is the opposite, as it is very important that nurses get involved in quantitative research, including the statistical data. According to Zach, 2022, Statistical understanding and use in nursing is important because:Statistics can let nurses understand and analyze different terms that these kind of research show, such as media and median data, percentages, percentiles, p number, sensitivity, specificity etc. Understanding of these terms is crucial, as if the concept is not clear for the reader, there is no way to accurately understand and analyze the numerical data shown in the research.Statistical findings interpretation is important, as this is the way nurse professionals can decide to apply this proposal to their guidelines in order to improve patients’ outcomes. Same way, by understanding and interpreting the statistical findings, the nurse would be able to explain this information to patients and their families.Statistical research understanding can also be interpreted by analyzing the odds ratios, which is the potential risks that a patients can show, compared with a control study that is not being exposed to a given situation analyzed in a research.

In everyday practice, healthcare providers are exposed to statistics. For example, whenever we assess a patient that has a health complaint, the way to find possible diagnosis orientation is related to statistics. The first diagnosis we can think about in first terms are the most common ones, which is statistic related. Then, the next step, which is confirming or ruling out a diagnosis, is to indicate laboratory or complimentary diagnosis tests. The ones we would indicate should be the ones we know that have been proven to show higher specificity rates. Once we have got a diagnosis, even the interventions and treatments are decided from the knowledge obtained by statistical analysis that we used to introduce a given practice to our guidelines. And then, the healthcare providers should always be up to date in the latest research to keep improving and getting better patients’ outcomes.

2. Understanding the fundamentals of nursing from its foundations, development, and subsequent performance of the profession, statistics have been indispensable in decision-making within what is known in nursing as evidence-based practice. We know that statistical aid in how data is collected and interpreted, analyzing it in a positive or negative way, is essential for the profession in decision-making always aimed at our patients

One of the benefits from statistics in the daily practice of nursing gives us the advantage of how to use the study results, interpret data found and how to apply  in the medical field to be used and applied to our patients. These investigative studies guide and provide much information within the parameters of validity, reliability, always based on evidence and previous experience. Relating these results to the clinic and preferences of our patients is crucial for future decision-making. Grove, S. K., & Cipher, D. J. (2019).

Consequently, the use of statistics in nursing has taken an important turn in terms of professionally taken improvements to obtain adequate healthcare and obtain information on strengths and weaknesses applicable to the patient for better results. An example could be the use of charts and data control that gives us valuable information to modify or improve applicable treatments and make the best decisions focused on the patient’s well-being (American Nurses Association, 2019).

It is noteworthy that over time, advances have been made through statistical research widely used in nursing, allowing visionary nurses to promote improvements in the individualized care of our patients and their health benefits. Statistical analysis, interpretation of data, and evidence-based experiences are significant for practicing the profession. We can also note that monitoring laboratories, vital signs, response to medications, behavior patterns, among others, can be of great importance in individual management, or with studied general patterns, we can compare and provide the best care. We can also identify any early alterations within the patterns and anticipate their timely attention. Grove, S. K., & Cipher, D. J. (2019).

Finally, it is worth mentioning that within the nursing profession, the everyday use of statistics has maintained a close and strict evaluation of the guidelines and development of the profession, always oriented towards improving patient-centered treatments. The nurse’s knowledge in this area is essential to understand and analyze the benefits and improvements applicable to the health and well-being of our patients.

Nursing Specialty Choice

Main Post

My choice of nursing specialty within the program is Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). As an FNP, I can care for children and adults. I currently work and run a medical spa that sees a large population of dermatology patients. The Nurse Practitioner who owns the medical spa sees many teenagers with acne problems and other skin concerns. With my FNP, I can take over the clinic as the primary provider to see patients of all ages.

There are more than 100 nursing organizations, each representing a subgroup of the profession, all of which aim to unite for advocacy around the mission of that organization (Cherry et al., 2019). The organization I will join is the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). I have already visited the site, created an account, and researched the membership. AANP has a student discount, which is $55 per year. With membership to the AANP, you get complete access to the research database, free continuing education, email updates with any governmental changes, and much more! With more than 121,000 members strong, you are joining a community of vibrant and diverse nurse practitioners (NPs) who have chosen to put their passion for improving the health of our nation into practice by supporting the advancement of the NP role (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2012).

Having membership in an organization is a great idea. It keeps you updated on any changes in the field that you are in. I’ve always kept up with an organization in the area that I have committed to. The organization I belonged to, up till recently, was AACN, American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Critical care used to be the field of nursing I belonged to. I also kept up my CCRN since 2014. When I tested for my CCRN, having my AACN helped me get a discounted rate for testing out. Professional organizations can serve as a venue for nurses to become engaged in the transformation of healthcare delivery (Echevarria, 2018).

If I had stayed in critical care, it would have been a difficult decision to decide between family or the adult route. In intensive care, you mostly see adults, but that limits your access to only caring for adults. Now, I have changed my passion to aesthetics and dermatology; it was an easy pick for the family route.

My decision to advance my nursing career was made with the plan of opening new opportunities such as leadership roles or advanced clinical practices with a more attractive salary in an environment where I may help others. I have worked as a psychiatric nurse for the past five years, and I find this area very humbling and rewarding therefore the decision to pursue the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) track was an easy decision for me. I was comfortable in my role as a psych nurse. I wanted to explore my options to “Play a bigger role in raising awareness of societal issues around mental illness and become a catalyst for social change” (Walden University n.d.).

I am also interested in seeking a doctoral degree shortly after completing the MSN program. DNPs, according to the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, “are able to apply skills in technology and information literacy, and engage in practice inquiry to improve health outcomes, policy, and healthcare delivery.” My challenge in becoming a PMHNP is juggling work, family (as a single parent), and school. Sometimes, I would like to commit to a part-time work schedule, but financially, this would be to my detriment. Time management is therefore critical to me to ensure success in the program.

The organization that interests me the most that I am considering becoming a member is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). “Nurses should consider the following factors when deciding between professional organizations: what they seek to gain from membership, which organization is best aligned with their current practice role and whether the professional organization demonstrates nursing advocacy” (Echevarria, 2018). APNA currently has over 30 000 members, and becoming a member is simple and may be accomplished with just a phone call. The annual membership is about $135, with discounted memberships available where you can communicate, vote on policies, serve on committees, benefit from educational programs, and connect to the exceptional resources available.

Discussion 1

It  was challenging to decide which nursing specialty to choose within the MSN program. At first, I was stuck between Family Nurse Practioner and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. The choice was challenging because I work on a step-down unit with most of my patients being older adults. I chose Family Nurse Practitioner for many reasons. First, I can treat various patients instead of specializing in one area. FNP can care for infants, adolescents, adults, and seniors (AANP, 2019). The variety of patients FNPs can care for opens up more job opportunities. Second, I can work in many areas, like private clinics, health care systems, community health centers, and universities (AANP, 2019). The last reason is that FNPs can obtain additional certifications. Those certifications can include pain, obesity management, and diabetes (AANP, 2019). I plan to get my certification in diabetes and obesity management. I want to help my patients control their diabetes to the best of my ability and help those who struggle with obesity. Board Certified- Advanced Diabetes Management helps practitioners skillfully adjust medications, counsel patients on lifestyle modifications, address psychosocial issues, mentor, research, and treat/monitor acute and chronic complications and other comorbidities (ADCES, n.d.). This will build on my knowledge of diabetes to provide high-quality care to my diabetic patients. The Obesity Management in Primary Care Training and Certificate Program is designed to aid Nurse practitioners in developing skills required for obesity management in primary care practices (AAPA, 2023). This certification will allow me to develop the knowledge and skills to treat obese patients effectively.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners is an organization that is affiliated with my chosen specialty. The nurse practitioner membership costs 150 dollars annually. I must first become board-certified to join this organization as an NP member.  The AANP is an opportunity to make a measurable difference in my profession and the country’s health (AANP, n.d.). I could also join this organization as a student. The annual fee for students is 55 dollars annually. I am eligible to join now because I am enrolled in an entry-level program with no education for a nurse practitioner.

Discussion 2

The process of focusing and developing into an authority in a subject or ability is known as specialization. It allows medical practitioners to narrow down on one of the thousands of facets of their area. This will enable individuals to stand out from the crowd and follow their passions. One of the remarkable things about concentrating on nursing is the incredible independence it offers. Sometimes, there are too many possibilities. For this reason, this procedure typically takes place later in a nurse’s career. Once they have had some opportunity to discover what piques their interest at work and accumulate experience, everything can influence your choice, including prior employment, patient contacts, and relationships with family members.

Choosing to become a family nurse practitioner was not difficult because I had been a pediatrician for ten years before I relocated to this country. Being a family nurse practitioner is expanding my scope of practice by giving care to all lifespans. Along with my three years of experience providing adult and geriatric acute care, my bachelor’s degree in nursing has enabled me to become a skilled and qualified registered nurse. I chose to specialize in family nurse practitioner (FNP) because I am interested in adult and geriatric care and want to grow in my nursing career. It is encouraging to learn that the demand for nurse practitioners is rising in light of the current scarcity of primary care physicians in the healthcare system. “Fellowship programs have emerged as a way for NPs to specialize their practice and meet the needs of an expanding health care system,” according to Keefe Marcoux, et.al. (2019). The most rewarding work I will do in my nursing career will be selecting family nurse practitioners as my specialty. It will give me career and job satisfaction.

RNs with diverse specializations may be members of several organizations. Because multiorganization membership can be expensive, nurses may evaluate which memberships are most beneficial (Echevarria, 2018). The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is one of the professional associations connected to my area of interest. According to PR Newswire (2019), AANP is “the oldest and largest national membership organization for nurse practitioners (NPs) of all specialties.” The association will allow me to network with professionals from different specialties and years of experience. AANP promotes and supports professional fulfillment throughout all practice areas, focusing on offering every patient an unmatched caliber of treatment. Joining is easy; register on their website with Annual Dues: $55 for students and $95 for those with prior NP certification.

In conclusion, specializing in family nursing has been my long-term goal since entering nursing school. As for me, it was a relatively easy choice to make because I want to expand my scope of practice from pediatrics to care for all ages. Being a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners will help advance my career by providing networking opportunities.

On the initial home visit by the nurse, what assessments should be made?

An older client was recently discharged from the hospital for evaluation of seizure activity. His history reveals that he has late-stage Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, and type II diabetes mellitus, which is controlled by diet. He lives at home, where his wife and daughter take care of him. His discharge medications include phenytoin (Dilantin), 100 mg BID; hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), 50 mg QD; levodopa (Sinemet), 25/100 TID; and haloperidol (Haldol), 1 mg before bed. The client has been referred for home care nursing follow-up.

Questions:

  1. On the initial home visit by the nurse, what assessments should be made?
  2. The wife and daughter need teaching about his antiepileptic medication. What teaching should be included?
  3. During the initial home visit, the client experiences a generalized seizure. What action should the nurse take?

Answer the questions below based on the following case study.

Answer the questions below based on the following case study.

A 20-year-old woman is brought to the local emergency department (ED) by her family. She appears restless, pacing around the waiting room, and her parents say that she has recently been asked to leave her job as a tattoo artist. She has not slept for four nights, and her speech is rapid and quickly wanders off the point. She had recently purchased a $20,000 car and a $40,000 van to jump-start her mobile tattoo business in Naples, Florida. She is very reluctant to remain in the ED department because she has far too much to do and considers it a waste of everyone’s time. She believes that she is far too important to be held back by minions.
