Review the following vignette:
You are a helping professional working with a 15 year old female name Rosa. Rosa is Hispanic and lives with her mother, father, and two younger brothers. Rosa is bright, high-achieving, and friendly. Rosa is seeing you for treatment of some test anxiety that she has in school. Rosa and her family are very active in the church. Rosa reports to you that the youth pastor at her church has been texting her things that make her uncomfortable such as “weird” memes, “dirty” jokes, and “strange” photos. You know this pastor well and have always thought highly of him.

Why do you think most individuals would instead go to their PCPs for psychotropic medication when this individual has not been specifically trained to prescribe these medications like a psychiatrist has been trained? What is a common misconception/assumption made about psychotropic medication (state at least one)?

Chapter 2 – Perception, Written Response pertaining to The Gestalt Principles of Perception
Gestalt Psychology was a strong force in Psychology, especially in Europe. However, it was less of a force in the U.S., and as textbooks can often be ethnocentric, our textbook does not go into enough detail regarding the Gestalt Psychology and their contributions to the field to Cognition, specifically in regard to Perception.
Simply put, Gestalt Psychology proposed that the “whole is different than the sum of its parts” (Anderson, 2020). The Gestalt Psychologists greatly advanced our understanding regarding how the brain organizes the visual stimuli that trigger the receptors on our retinas (aka, sensation) in a way that that we can perceive actual objects in our external world.
The laws (aka, principles) that Gestalt Psychology proposed greatly help us understand how we can perceive objects/units (e.g., people, places, things, etc.). These “laws” are now typically referred to as the Gestalt Principles of Organization. Our brain uses these principles to make processing of visual input more efficient; in essence they are heurists (aka, mental shortcuts).
We use these principles to principles in our everyday life, although we are not typically aware of doing so.
Example:
I am walking down the hall and see two individuals who are walking towards me, coming from the opposite direction (note: I do not see thousands of bits and pieces of separate details. I see each individual as being one whole person (Pragnanz/Simplicity). They are both wearing shorts and hoodies and they both have their hair up in ponytails (Similarity). I assume that they are both students because of this. They are walking near each other (Proximity). I assume that they are friends because of this. Parts of their bodies are covered up by their clothes, but I still perceive that they have full bodies. I do not think that their hands are separate from their bodies, even though I cannot see where their hands are connected to their arms. My mind fills in the missing information (Closure). They are walking on the left side of the hall. I assume that they will continue walking on that side (Good Continuation) and not suddenly step to the right of the hall where I am walking. When I am focusing my attention on these two individuals, I perceive them as being the Figure(s) and the other visual stimuli (i.e., the hall, the walls, etc.) as being the Ground (aka, background). If I suddenly, see a colleague who has entered the hallway, behind them, and I focus my attention on my colleague, my colleague becomes the Figure and the two individuals become part of the Ground.
Directions:
Artists and graphic designers use Gestalt Principles regularly. For this Written Response you will:
Find an image that uses these Principles. To make this more interesting pick an image that really amazes you. (hint: good search phrases – Psychological Optical Illusions, Optical Illusions- Hidden Pictures, Gestalt in Art or Graphics, etc.). I have added some images below my (partial) example of this assignment, to assist you with ideas of potential images.
Paste the image to your word document.
Explain why you chose this image.
Explain examples, for each of these 6 Gestalt Principles of Organization, that are in the image.
My PARTIAL example of this Written Response Assignment:
Please note: I do want to provide an entire example the entire example as it would detract from you using your cognitive processes.
B.
C.
I chose this image because it astounded me that so many images could be perceived in it. It amazes me what I “see” depends on my perception (e.g., two archways or two outlines of the heads, two sets of facial features or two men playing guitar, an earring or a bottle of wine, etc.). In addition, I found the image to be especially joyful because it involves either an older couple lovingly gazing at each other or two men and a female onlooker having a relaxing time with music. I also appreciate….
D.
Figure-Ground – Figure-Ground is represented in many ways in this image. If I focus my attention on the central golden shape, then that becomes the figure and I perceive a vase/goblet and the other visual information becomes the ground. If I focus on the two faces, then they become the figure and the rest of the image is the ground. If I focus on the two men and the woman in the distant left, then…
Pragnanz/Simplicity/Good Form – I perceive what is in the image as whole forms. For example, when looking at the faces, I perceive the details of the faces, but I do not see these details as being meaningless bits of information. Instead, I receive these bits of information as whole faces. Similarly, when looking at the two men…
Similarity –
Proximity –
Closure –
Good Continuation –
Hints for the rest of the principles:
We organize/group objects or parts of objects together if they are similar in color, size, shape, et. (Similarity).
We organize/group objects or parts of objects together if they are near to each other (Proximity)
Our minds fill in the gaps when information is missing from what we “see” (Closure).
We perceive lines and movement as continuing in straight or curved lines (Good Continuation).

Watch this video for the first questions: https://youtu.be/G5-HTuRGMmk . The idea that emotions are part of our repertoire for an important survival reason reflects which theory of motivation/emotion? Why are motivation and emotion presented in the same chapter in your text, and how does the case of Marvin relate? #2. Which theory of Motivation? Researchers have found that one of the biggest barriers to exercising is that people do not like how they feel when they sweat or when their heart accelerates. What is being disrupted for them? To which theory of motivation does this relate? Hint: it’s the reason the ten minute rule works for many. If you don’t want to do something, tell yourself that you will do it for only 10 minutes. By the time you get 10 minutes in, you may just find that you will easily keep going. See: this article: https://www.inc.com/amy-morin/want-to-stop-procrastinating-try-the-10-minute-rule.html #3: Which Theory of Motivation? A researcher has found that when the economy is booming, gambling increases, while buying insurance premiums decreases. During economic recessions, however, the reverse pattern is seen. Explain your choice. #4: Components of Emotions (5 min) Watch this: https://youtu.be/PzEH5t4Xp9Y Referring to this video, give me an example of each of the three components of emotion. You will have to use your imagination as they’re not explicit in the video but put yourself in this guy’s place. #5: The Science of Happiness (10 min) Link: https://digital-films-com.proxy.hil.unb.ca/p_ViewVideo.aspx?xtid=47668&tScript=0 Although this is an older video, the research discussed in it has been further supported by more recent research. Now read pages 378-379 in 5th edition or 396-399 in the 6th edition of your text and think about how this video relates. Based on the video and your text, please answer the following: What is the relationship between money and happiness? What other factors are associated with a sustained elevation of happiness? What are not associated with this? Although not discussed in chapter 10, _____ was emphasized in the video as a practice that can promote happiness (there is a section on this in chapter 14: stress and resilience). When good or bad things happen to people, they tend to shift their point of comparison in gauging their level of happiness, so that they adapt to their new circumstances. This is called _________ (see text). # 6: Identify the theory of emotion There are three theories as to how emotion is generated discussed in your text: James-Lange, Cannon-Bard and Schacter’s Two-Factor (which I tend to refer as the Schacter-Singer theory; Stanley Schacter and Jerome Singer together proposed this theory, but for some reason your textbook authors dropped Singer’s name). As mentioned in class, however, the research into this area has come a long way since then, and so to update and broaden the discussion, I introduced two other more recent theories: the theory of Constructed Emotion (Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett’s theory) and the Embodied Cognition & Emotion Theory. For the examples below, please indicate which of these five theories is best reflected. Please note: a particular theory may apply more than once or not at all. Also, if you missed the lecture, you can find information about the two theories discussed in class (they are not discussed in the text) in the PowerPoint slides, along with links to videos relating to each. 1. Today Neil received a treatment for his migraine headaches which involved an injection of Botox into the muscles in his forehead and around his brows. He now cannot contract those muscles and furrow his brows. This evening he notices that when his teenager was clearly trying to antagonize him, he just didn’t feel as irritated as he usually does. 2. A researcher asked participants to attend to images flashed on a screen. Half of the participants were instructed to pull a joystick toward them when the image was related to forests and to push it away from them when the image was related to fields. The other half of the participants were asked to respond in the opposite way to fields and forests. The researcher then assessed participants’ emotional responses to the images and found that participants reported more positive emotional response to the images they had responded to by pulling the joystick toward them compared to the images to which they responded by pushing the joystick away from them. 3. Jack had an espresso just before working out at the gym. As he’s pounding away on the treadmill, his heart is racing a little faster than it usually does. He stops momentarily to wipe the sweat from his face and notices the person on the treadmill next to him. He is amazed at how strongly attracted he is to this person and wonders why he hadn’t noticed them before. 4. Eric is a five year old whose parents are dependable, warm and use a lot of positive reinforcement. On the other hand, Eric’s cousin Ethan’s parents are unpredictable and tend to use harsh punishment with him and his older brother. One day the cousins were together in the care of an older relative, and when he suddenly received good news through a text, he excitedly shouted. Eric’s reaction to his shouting was excitement, while Ethan experienced a surge of fear. 5. Jane and Jack were driving along a rural road and nearly hit a deer. Afterwards, Jane commented that she thinks she didn’t really feel fearful until after her heart started racing. Jack says that as far as he was aware, his feeling of fear happened at the very same time his heart started racing. Jane’s observations are most consistent with the ________ theory of emotion, while Jack’s reflect the __________ theory.

Researchers start with a question such as “What do I want to know?”; “What is important for society to know?”; or “Why does this occur?” After a researcher decides on what question he/she wants to answer he/she must state his/her goals and objectives. Research questions must be empirical, meaning researchers are able to perceive it through one of the five senses ofsight, taste, touch, hearing, or smell. The next step is to conduct a literature review to establish what is already known about the topic. Much research builds on existing research. The research question is usually stated as a hypothesis. A hypothesis is the researcher’s educated belief about what he/she will find.
In examining various aspects of psychological research, present eight research questions you would like to study.
Are these questions empirical? Why are these questions relevant in the field of psychology?

It is October; the tenured and respected counselor on your staff is soon to go on maternity leave any day now. She is a leader in your department in terms of popularity with students, experience, and mentoring other counselors. The counselor is not sure how long her maternity leave is, but at a minimum, she is going to be off for the rest of the school year. The other two counselors are new, with less than a year of experience each. They are concerned about her workload dispersement. This is a 6-12 school; you cannot get a leave replacement due to insufficient budgeting. Currently, the counselors are overwhelmed with the amount of crisis the students are in, and they are still in the process of learning the job. With this counselor gone the others will have more work and morale is a concern for both staff and students accepting changes within the department. Due to your supervision status and overwhelming duties, you cannot take on a caseload.
Make a plan that will allow you to efficiently lead your staff through this time.
What should you do and why? Give a detailed plan on steps to take. Provide a clear and concise reflection paper on your thought process with consideration of your ethics, experience, school regulations, and all factors that influence your decision-making. Give suggestions for possible solutions, approaches and anticipated outcomes. Include approaches for staff, students and parents.
Based on the information learned from the module, I’d like you to select one of the drugs we have studied in class (or other with instructor approval) and prepare your discussion board post on this drug. Information on the drug should include the physiological (body & brain), psychological, sociological, historical, legal, and other issues and opinions you wish to present concerning the drug. You must include at least three (3) scholarly reference sources within your post, beyond your textbook. Examples of sources include empirical articles from scholarly journals obtained through searching ERIC or other appropriate databases, books or articles recognized by the profession to be refereed and professional presentations given at conferences. NOTE: most Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Lexis-Nexis, Erowid and other general web-based searches DO NOT yield scholarly material and you will NOT get credit for using these unless you have already met the two (2) scholarly reference requirement for the paper.
